In this article, you will learn how to use the Budget feature and add limits to campaigns. To access the Budget settings, open an existing campaign and navigate to Settings and select Budgets.
What is a Budget?
When you set a budget, you can limit the number of redemptions possible in your campaign and/or the total amount you want to spend. Depending on the conditions and effects you have set in your campaign and the features used (e.g. discounts, referrals, coupons or loyalty points), the budget feature can be used to set restrictions.
Adding a Budget
Follow these steps to add a Budget to your campaign:
- Navigate to the Settings page of your campaign
- Click +Add Limit
- Determine your Limit (where the budget should be applied) and Scope (what will count toward the budget)
- Define the Scope
- Define a Limit
- Set Campaign Budgets
- Click on each element and set the limit
- Click the grey Delete symbol on the right to remove a limit
Click Save Changes when you are finished
*Note: Depending on your campaign requirements, you may require multiple limits within your budget or none at all.
Default Campaign Budgets can be set up for every new campaign you create, scroll down to see how.
Defining the Scope
Before setting a Budget Limit you need to define the scope to which a limit applies. Currently there are five scope options which you can choose:
- Campaign - Limits will have a campaign-wide effect
- Profile - Limits will be applied to each profile
- Identifier - Limits will be applied to each identifier
- Coupon - Limits will be applied to each coupon code
- Referral - Limits will be applied to each referral code
Read our Updating a Customer Session section in our Developer Documentation to understand more about adding identifiers. You can also contact Talon. One Support if you need help configuring an identifier.
Defining the Budget Limit
All budget limits take effect at the scope level. You can apply budget limits to discounts, referrals, coupons and loyalty effects.
Discount Limits
Discount Total - Limits how much discount is given based on your currency.
Discount Effects - Limits how many times a discount effect can be triggered.
Referral Limit
Referral Redemptions - Limits how many times a referral code can be redeemed.
Referral Creations - Limits how many times a referral code can be created.
Coupon Limits
Coupon Redemptions - Limits how many times a coupon code can be redeemed.
Coupon Creations - Limits how many times a coupon code can be created.
Loyalty Limits
Loyalty Points Total - Limits the total amount of points that can be added.
Add Loyalty Points Effects - Limits how many times "Add Loyalty Points" effect can be triggered.
Loyalty Points Redeemed - Limits the total amount of points that can be redeemed.
Redeem Loyalty Points Effects - Limits how many times "Redeem Loyalty Points" effect can be triggered.
Remember to click Save Changes after adding your Budget Limit. Once a campaign is running, you can find an overview of your Budget in the Campaign Dashboard. You can always come back to the Settings page and make changes to your Budget.
Default Campaign Budgets
In the Settings page of your Application, you can define default budget restrictions that will be inherited by all new campaigns.
By defining a default budget here at the Application-level, all new campaigns created in this application will have these budget settings from the beginning.
Two important notes:
- Defaults are just the starting value given to new campaigns and can be changed for each individual campaign later.
- Changing the default budget values will not change, add or update a budget for any campaigns that already exist.
A campaign Budget is not required but is highly recommended as a security measure to avoid overspending, fraud, loss of revenue, etc. You can also define the limits in the Coupons or Referral page of your campaign.
