In this article you will learn more about using Effects in the Rule Builder. You should have already read about Building a Rule and Using Conditions.

What is an Effect?

In Talon. One, Effects occur when ALL or SOME of the Conditions or a rule are validated to TRUE. When the Rule Engine evaluates conditions, Effects will only be triggered if the Conditions are valid. Effects are defined in the rules of your campaign, for example set a 5% discount, give 20€ off a specific item or make an item free.

Available Effects

When you select +Add Effects a drop down will appear with a list of possibilities to build your condition. Below is a list of available options and their definitions.

Apply cart item discount

Use this effect to apply a discount to a specific item in a customer's cart. First you must select the Cart Item Filter you have already created in this rule then select the type of discount effect you want to apply for that item. Learn more about Cart Item Discounts.

For example, select a specific product like "Winter Gloves" that you have saved as a Cart Item Filter. Next click "Pick the effect" and choose either "Make Items Free" or "Per Item Discount" from the drop down menu. If you choose discount, you can customize your formula as required.

Click the blue button on the right side of the field to open the palette and add a variable to your formula such as "Shipping Cost" to give free shipping.

Set a discount

Use this effect to apply a discount on a customer's session. Whatever information you enter in the Value field will determine the discount effect that is returned to a customer.

For a dollar amount discount, type in the amount into the value field (e.g., 10 for 10€ off). Percentage discounts require the formula “SessionTotal * 10%”.

Click the blue button on the right side of the field if you want to add a variable to your formula.

You can also enter more complex formulas and/or variables in the Value field to create more dynamic discounts. For example, you can use a saved Cart Item Filter or a Custom Attribute you have already created like "Sale Items".

Add item to cart

If you want to give a free item if the customer qualifies for all conditions. Input the SKU or by variable to determine what is added to their cart.

Update a value

Select this option if you want to update an attribute value of a profile or session. For example, if a customer enters a valid coupon code, you can update their  "Profile Credit" or loyalty points to a new amount.

This is a very useful Effect if you want to trigger discounts or rewards for a subscription business model.

Set a notification

To notify customers of special offers or rewards on your site, you can select the "Set notification" Effect and trigger a message. Read how to create a Notification As Effect here.

Create Coupon Code

Automatically generate a Coupon Code as an effect of your campaign. For example, if a customer makes completes an event like registration or a purchase, automatically generate a new code as a reward.

For these codes you can add an expiry date directly in the Rule Builder. Go to Settings to configure the shape and length of these codes (note: these are not the same type of codes you create in Coupons).

Select "Store generated value in session" if you want to use this code in a second effect. That effect could be "Update a value" and you could add this generated code by selecting it from the Palette.

If you click "Coupon Attributes", the section will expand so you can add values to the Coupon Attributes you have already defined.

Create a Referral Code

You can choose to automatically generate a Referral Code as an effect in your campaign. Go to Settings to configure the shape and length of these codes (note: these are not the same type of codes you see in Referrals)

The same settings for expiry dates, storing the code and Coupon Attribute values apply to Referral Codes.

Webhooks

A Webhook will execute effects outside the Talon. One API and trigger third party services like Email or SMS. Webhooks will appear in Effects only if they have been configured in the Developers section of your account. Learn how to configure a Webhook here

For example, create a webhook that will trigger an email to a customer when their friend redeems a Referral Code.
